Cherie Stolz, Studio Owner/Instructor

Cherie Stolz took her first Pilates class as a means of stress relief from a busy career in Human Resources.
Not only did she find that stress relief she was seeking, but she felt great!  Pilates was making her stronger,
improving her posture and body awareness and increasing her self confidence.  She loved the way it made
her feel so much that she decided that she wanted to help others feel the benefits of Pilates as well.

Cherie was certified to teach the Pilates method by Body Arts and Science International (BASI) in 2003.   She
works with a wide range of clientele, from golfers, tennis players and equestrians to business professionals and
retirees.  Her education includes a B.A. in Political Science and a Masters in Business Administration.  Cherie is a
member of The Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) and continues to develop her knowledge and skills through
continuing education workshops with leaders in the Pilates industry.

What is Pilates?
Although recently popularized in the last decade, Pilates was actually developed over 80 years ago by a man
named Joseph H. Pilates.  Originally called "Contrology" by Mr. Pilates, this method of mind-body exercise
involves the strengthening and stretching of the muscles of the whole body creating profound results
including improved muscle tone without adding bulk, improved posture, flexibility, body awareness, balance,
coordination and muscle symmetry.

Pilates can be performed with no equipment at all (Pilates Mat classes), or it can be performed on the various
pieces of equipment invented by Joseph Pilates such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair and Spine
Corrector, among others.

The guiding principles of Pilates include Breath, Control, Awareness, Concentration, Precision, Balance,
Centering and Flow.
Who was Joseph H. Pilates?
Joseph H. Pilates (1880-1967), a German immigrant, was a sickly child suffering from rickets, asthma and
rheumatic fever.  At a young age he began studying anatomy, yoga, and Greek and Roman exercise
regimens among other things to overcome his own afflictions.  Combing these disciplines he was able to
develop the strength to become a diver, gymnast, boxer and even a circus performer.

Working in England at the start of WWI, he was incarcerated in Lancaster and on the Isle of Man as an
enemy alien with other German nationals.  In camp Pilates was able to continue to develop his method, which
he called "Contrology", by teaching the other inmates his exercises.  He was even able to work with medical
patients with various illnesses and is credited with helping many of them maintain their health during the
deadly flu epidemic.  After the war he returned to Germany briefly before immigrating to the United States.

In 1926 Joseph Pilates moved to New York City with his wife Clara.  He continued to develop his technique,
creating over 600 exercises, until his death in 1967.  His guiding philosophy behind his work was that the
"whole" must be exercised to achieve good health.  He has been considered to be revolutionary in his
thinking and truly ahead of his time.
